Twain's restaurant

Note:  I wrote this circa 2009, and it was sitting in my drafts for ages.  I'll post this but I don't know what it's like now, or if they have changed their food or policies.  Please bear this in mind when reading this.  Thanks!

Late night eats at Twains back when I had the night shift with Louisa, I had looked up this place Twains on restaurant.com, I had wanted to use a gift certificate to try out a new place to eat that managed to still be open late. Twains wasnt too hard to find, the place itself was very retro and had an awesome old atmosphere and seating the cash register was of special interest, as it was super old, and had those big mechanical buttonsso fun.
The place started getting more crowded as the night went on, and it really looked like only 3 people were manning the whole place one cook, one waiter/cashier/host, one busboy. They did what they could but with all the people starting to stream in and sit on the patio, they were swamped.
This is what we got:
Twain's Restaurant
Louisas salad that was instantly delivered to the table after ordering, Im guessing pre-made. Iceberg lettuce, huge chunk of cucumber, dinky croutons, ranch salad pretty standard diner fare.
Twain's Restaurant
My usual order of an Arnold palmer note the ice chunks. I have a weird appeal for the mini ice chunks, I think mainly because they usually give you so much of it and it turns your drink super cold. Love that.

Louisas roast beef dinner, glistening and covered in brown gravy. Really, its a marvel of diner food, this is what diner food should look like. She was pretty mediocre on the meat itself, and picked through the vegetables, but she absolutely adored the mashed potatoes. She had said that she was willing to revisit Twains just for a whole plate of mashed potatoes and gravy. Thats a serious endorsement.

Garlic bread came with Louisas dinner. She ate it. I dont think there was anything much else to it.

My dinner well, heres some wheat toast, buttered. Not much to say about that, I like toast, this was toast.

And heres the rest of my dinner or rather, breakfast for dinner Corned beef hash, with poached eggs, and hash browns. Yep, its a trip down carbohydrate street, but I think a good measure for how good a breakfast place is, is how they do their corned beef hash plate. This wasnt a bad version Poached eggs were very good, runny in the middle and mixed with the corned beef well, the corned beef itself was a little too salty, but nicely offset by egg yolk and toast. The hash browns were not my favorite I like the grated potato style and notwell, I guess you can say these potatoes were flaked? They had a decent amount of crispiness and griddle time, definitely edible, but hash browns are not the thing to get here, for me.
Dessert, I wanted to try their dessert after reading about some of it online. Totally a mistake on both our parts.

When we asked our waiter about the available pies, I wasnt really jazzed at the flavors, so I got a carrot cake slice, not bad, but I really was too full to eat much of it. I ate about a quarter of it before giving up. I feel bad for wasting it.
Twain's Restaurant
The travesty which was Louisa
s peach pie slice was unforgivable. The only edible thing was the crust, and even that wasnt very good. Not flaky enough. The filling of the pie was so disgusting that I think it was a crime against pie. The peach slices were held completely suspended in place by a stiff glutinous substance, I guess it was supposed to be the syrupy sweetener, but it was plain gross. Never, ever again on dessert.
Also, the ending of the meal was further ruined when we tried to use the 25 dollar gift certificate, and the waiter insisted that we could not use it yet, as the computer system mistakenly let us buy the certificate.  So, no 25 dollars off.
Twain's Restaurant
That was upsetting.  But maybe we can use it later?

Irori Japanese Restaurant
4371 Glencoe Ave # B-4 (Cross Street: Mindanao)
Marina Del Rey, CA 90292

I like taking my shoes off while eating.
Is that weird? I only do this at home, then again we have a "no shoes in the apartment" rule. (Don't disrespect the dojo, man!). It just feels more comfortable, relaxed...it just feels more chill and makes the food taste all the better. Irori is special because it has the same policy I do - shoes off! The tables here suspended just slightly off the ground, and the seats are situated lower so it's like you're eating at a picnic table...below ground level. It's really fun.

But atmosphere aside (I can't eat atmosphere! It has no calories!)...let's go to the food!

The usual starter to most Japanese meals: rabbit food, aka salad. This salad was pretty decent though, as it was mixed greens instead of the browning iceburg lettuce like at many other restaurants I've been to. Good sharp tangy dressing to bring it all home. Hellooooo Lobster tempura rolls! These were really good - meaty tender pieces of lobster, battered and deep fried tempura coating, rolled up with some avocado, rice, seaweed and sesame seeds. These were devoured in no time. Succulent Toro rolls. Soooo good. Melt in your mouth good, where the fish dissipates into pure joyous flavor once it makes contact with your tongue. Amazing quality fish. Amber and I shared this and were equally impressed.
Bryan just had a plate of raw tuna. He was in a carnivorous mood..even the sushi chef was like, "what?? that's all you're eating?" These tuna chunks were so pretty - a perfect pink color!
I got a delicious salmon teriyaki. Great presentation on the leaf. They gave me a fairly big portion, so i was pretty happy with that. It was cooked perfectly, not too dry, not undercooked.

Here's the close up, which ended up being a little blurry, but you can see that awesome crispy skin. Some people don't like eating salmon skin - I am not one of those people, as long as there are no scales.

Irori is a must try for their different style of eating, fresh fish and good eats. Take off your shoes and stay awhile!

Philippe's - The original french dip sandwich
1001 N. Alameda St. Los Angeles CA. 90012 -
(Downtown LA, close to Union Station, Chinatown and Olivera Street)

I've been craving a decent french dip sandwich for awhile. And not any old french dip sandwich (french dip from IHOP is not my idea of fufilling a sandwich craving...much less any kind of craving for anything edible) - something transcendent, something life-changing - well okay, I can just settle for something filling and delicious. Philippe's fills that need nicely.

Philippe's has been around for awhile (that's an understatement - hardly do I get to eat at any restaurant that was established before the 1990's, Philippe's started in 1908...) and seems to do pretty well for itself, sticking to what it knows best - good quality food, cash only, sawdust on the floor, cafeteria style service.

Everyone waits in line for their sandwich, to give their orders to waitresses who prepare your sandwich or anything else you order behind the counter. They all wear spiffy uniforms, and have that "tough as nails" vibe - but don't be afraid, they are so polite and nice! Order what you want, they put everything on disposable cardboard plates (so high school cafeteria!), pay them (CASH only, yep, I know this is the second time I mentioned it) and do remember to TIP them (they give you change on this little tray, leave them their tip on there.)

Scuffle on the sawdust (to hide...what I'm stepping on underneath the sawdust? Unsettling..), roll up to a bench and gaze upon...

The french dip. I got a beef french dip. At each table there's their famous mustard (hot hot hot, but I love the stuff - not unlike chinese hot mustard, I could drink it if I needed to), give your sandwich an extra lashing or two of this mustard if you dare. The first bite...is perfect. Meat and meat juice are contained sufficiently within the bread - and not too soggy! A small bite of the potato salad scoop, with its' dusting of paprika, is a good balance. It's not the best potato salad I've had but definitely ranks up there with "potato salads I'd eat again".
Here's a lovely close up - waiting to be eaten!
Philippe's lemonade is notorious not for its' taste, but for its' price - 60 cents! Lemonade from a kids' lemonade stand is not that cheap anymore! And that's the great thing about this place - everything is super cheap and good quality. My beef dip sandwich ran me $4.90. Scoop of potato salad? 95 cents. This is UNHEARD of anywhere else! If you haven't gone, take in some of the scenery and food over at Philippe's. Take advantage of their hospitality (and free parking!)
